ON THE HISTORY OF THE HORUS MAAT LODGE – BY AION 131

(absurdly long lecture notes)
PRESENTED AT THE ESOTERIC BOOK CONFERENCE - SEATTLE. WA- 9/2010

(NOTES: I waaaaay over-prepared- 16 pages of notes- so I skipped through this text, hitting high points and key points, summarized as I went and gave major plugs for Nema and her works as well as for the HML and my upcoming double-current grimoire- Liber Sigil A IAF- which did not get published in time for the conference – sadly- I also injected some humor and answered several very good questions and a few silly ones with, I hope, humor and some truth-131)

Greetings fellow writers, sages, adepts Lords and Ladies of Chaos all-

Abrahadabra, Ipsos, Thelema, Agape- N’Aton

May every word I say advance in some small way the evolution of humanity and the manifestation of unified world consciousness here and now.

Ok! Now that we have all the Theology out of the way, let me just say how honored I am to be speaking with you.

I was asked by out kind host to say a few words about the founding of an obscure magickal organization

I must also at the outset acknowledge the special debt I and many others owe to Soror Nema. She forms in many ways the core of the order, many of the central documents owe much to her and her writings are recommended to everyone- Maat Magick and all the rest.

The subject, then is the ostensibly the founding of a modern magickal order called the Horus Maat lodge.

I will give a short introduction, then I will discuss the actual linear history of the HML, finally I will expound a bit on the founding charter of the lodge with, I hope, some relevant takeaways all.

(Here I mentioned that couldn’t possibly get through all of this in 1 hr so the full text would be posted on the HML website- which I of course mentioned often…
I also had the Inner Council members present, Shade, Nemus, Orryelle, all stand and take a bow- later on Shade stood up and gave a shameless but adroit plug for Silverstar and called for submissions)

Let’s get to the point: We were, of course, originally founded but a consortium of ascended masters and demigods from Atlantis, Mu and Lemuria who were on vacation in Kadath. We have proof. Papers. Initiations. Hideous idols. The usual. Our order is, as you know, is the moving force behind all esoteric Masonic Cults, Modern Wicca and all Thelemic orders. Not Satanism, however. You can blame Ozzy and Anton for that.

Ok, I’m having a bit of fun here. The truth is, of course, that as a magickal lodge we have no claim on direct initiated lineage from any ancient or arcane tradition at all, and that is exactly how we like it. We have forged something new, yet, it seems, something humming with the core energies that are the ultimate test of any magickal order that seeks to advance the great work of human evolution. Because we have forged something of a new path within the paradigm of the esoteric sub-culture, it is my hope that what and who we are will have some relevance to others involved in the Art Magick.

A FEW CORE CONCEPTS

What is a LODGE, in an esoteric sense?

Here are a few definitions from Webster’s

A shelter or abode
The meeting place of an organization, esp. fraternal
The body of members of an organization
An inn or resort hotel
A family of Native Americans/ Native American large meeting hall
The lair or den of gregarious animals

Guess which definition works best for me?

DOUBLE CURRENT

This is a term begun by Nema and the GSS and picked up by others like KG to describe a magickal phenomena that is the core of the Lodge- to wit: the blending of the energies of this current ‘new’ aeon of Horus (93 current) and the energies of the currently available ‘future’ Aeonic magick of Maat (we call the 696 current) As adepts before us discovered, notably Fr. Achad, Maatian energies are available here-now and the excessive force and fire of the 93 current balances and blends well with the Maat vibe. Magick is transaeonic in this paradigm, reflecting the non-linear physics that rule our thinking today.

PAN AEONIC SCHEMA:

…rising out of the Nameless Aeon of our prehistoric and shamanic past are four other periods of historic development. The age of Isis the Mother was of paganism and nature, and that of Osiris the Father of monotheism and the rise of cities. The corruption at the end of this period is now being overthrown by the new energies of Horus the Son, our modern era of anarchy and chaos and technological changes. This will in turn become the time of the Daughter Maat, whose way of being will manifest in unique and unexpected ways. N’ATON:

Naton is the Great Work - the unified species GroupMind- the Omega Point.
To us, this is the goal of the Lodge and of all magick.

ELEVENSTAR-
The unifying global group ritual that forms the active core work of the lodge. Essentially, it is an ever-evolving monthly ritual designed to promote and facilitate the awakening of N’ATON on all levels by manifesting the Double Current in and through the circuit of the 11 traditional spheres or Thrones of the Tree of Life. It is done in sync by all members of the Lodge wherever they are as they will.

THE HORUS/MAAT LODGE
The foundation of the Horus/Maat Lodge took place on the New Moon of April 26th of 1979, at a gathering of Soror Nema and the members of the Grove of the Star & the Snake. Our goal was to form a loose constellation of Thelemic Mages devoted to spreading the evolutionary energies of the Double Current 93/696, as free as possible from the type of authoritarian hierarchy that is so common in occult organizations.
Self-initiation is encouraged, as we realized that all initiation is essentially individual, personal, sometimes random, mysterious, and impossible to categorize or define for others. We sought to make freely available a Way of Magick that we have found to be more effective than any other contemporary system or non-system. Our symbol is the red triangle of Horus (as noted by Crowley) pointed downwards, marked with a black feather of flame .
Those with a very wide range of backgrounds have been drawn to form a link with us. Out of the chaos of magick, Wicca, Tantra, alchemy, science, Taoism, art, voodoo, yoga, shamanism, astrology, politics, religion, surrealism, history, physics, psychology, or hermetic philosophy we have found that the multitude of selves we all carry within us can be joined in a more universal Self.

HISTORY OF THE HML FOUNDING

HML TIMELINE

Now let’s stroll down memory lane - frankly, where the HML is concerned many memories are lacking.
So I suppose I should get this out of the way right away.

For the sake of tack, I will be excluding from my narrative all the really interesting stuff involving anything which may be seen as illegal. These will, of course, be available after my death-

Here are the events that led up to the creation of the HML

1974- Scribing of Liber PP – Official founding of the GSS …..

(Bate Cabal/ CJCM) Founding of Cincinnati Chapter of the Crowned and
Conquering Child. At the Winter Solstice rite 3 mages first sensed N'Aton
during a time-travel working (details available upon request). Two weeks after the rite, Nema was given two black feathers. Four weeks after
the rite, She experienced Liber Pennae Praenumbra. (Again, details available on
request). After a few days, She felt a need, and satisfied it, to send a copy of Liber PP
to KG. she began the painting of LPP.

Janice Ayers, Sr. Tanith 789, was with KG when the ms. arrived. She later told me
that he had been working with Frater Achad's writings at the time, and that he did
a Tarot layout as soon as he'd finished reading Liber PP. KG suggested I join
TOTO, apologizing for the Probationer MR requirement. My then-current HP did
not want me to join, and we broke up. So it goes.

Extensive communication with Nema & GSS – utilization of private MSS (Maat
Magick) Great Success

78- A Charter for the creation of the first Double Current Lodge crafted and
signed in Dec- The HML

79- April: The GSS & Nema meet and manifest the HML on the outer and the
inner in a 3-4 day ritual working.

“(The Grove of the Star & the Snake) who had discovered and utilized the 93 current for several years in their on-going experiments and workings, discovered the Maat current in the form of Liber Pennae Praenumbra. The effect of this current on their magickal circles was instantaneous and dramatic. They went from being a burning vortex of Nu Aeon Magick to a supernova as they wove the two currents together in their group and solitary workings. Realizing the power of this nexus of currents, as well as seeing the gate such a nexus opened in the cosmos, they began a long and complex correspondence with Soror Andahadna (now known as Nema), the Scribe of the Maat Current. She graciously shared with them further work on the same subject (much of which later became the book MAAT MAGICK) and they in turn excited her with the solid and sometimes amazing results of these on-going experiments. Finally, it was agreed that all parties had to meet and so the G.S.S. drove off to Andahadna's farm in Ohio for a most momentous occasion. What occurred when the GSS and Andahadna met was something like two differently charged particles meeting- in a trance many saw this meeting as a wild and flaring mass of crackling 93 energy (dayside) running head-on into a whirling black-flame vortex of Maat -696- energy (Nightside). Thus, when the GSS and Andahadna met and entered deep and shamanic ritual space together, a kind of fusion was created- a fusion that resulted in a permanent Praxis of the Double Current in the form of the Horus/Maat Lodge.

   What follows are some diary entries, poems and thoughts centered around the founding of this gestalt amassed from all the participants.....

Ritual…

Each member of the G.S.S. took his/her allotted elemental symbol and also took the HML symbol/sigil outside to create a vortex while Andahadna worked her drum-magicks in the Shadow Temple. In the blackened rain-filled field, standing in the four directions, not feeling the Earth, but at some great height amongst stars. Dance of the Double Current & the sigil is consumed with fire at the still-point center amidst the wild storm. Then, the manifestation of Nu which is Had! The sky is heavy gray above, the rain becomes needle fine.

We returned inside to the Shadow Temple to rejoin the vortex Andahadna has kept spinning. We assume the 4 points of chairs/thrones about the temple. Then, the reading of the Holy Books; Liber Al Vel Legis and Liber Pennae Praenumbra. Every word is alive and a universe complete. Tremendous power spins and billows forth. The air is extremely clear & freezing, with an alien smell, intensely pure. At the end of the reading (and Andahadna danced Liber PP) we did the Ka Worship Rite all together to seal the event, then we went outside together.

The sky was completely and totally clear! And we were struck by the beauty of the heavens. The stars shone clear, brilliant, infinite - a true vision of the Comity of Stars- we were struck silent in awe. The vision lasted for a period of several minutes, then covered itself with heavy clouds again.

Inside, in the house, Andahadna's daughter (Lee) had been moved to draw a Horus/Maat gynander with flame and feather in hands (see image at the beginning of this page). She did not know about our working and said that she 'felt compelled to draw it.'

After that two members of Bate Cabal arrived, drawn to the farm (they said) by the energies manifesting. They did the Midnight Adoration of the sun with us, ending the night. (The next day, they became the first 'initiates' into the HML.)

We later found out that the day of this manifestation rite was the New Moon. Hades, Kreb ent Ptah and Aion had all previously checked almanacs to make sure that it was NOT the new moon all; were all quite sure that it was no where near. A collective error that was amazing. Indeed, the dark of the moon was on April 26 and it turned out that the HML manifested exactly at that hour!"

79-90- Great expansion- many initiations

By 84- 85 all GSS and Nema expelled from OTO.
-KG Publishes famous ‘HML is a cell of the TOTO’ comment
(Outside the Circles?) which is repudiated immediately by the IC of the HML.

81- 84- Voxas Rimotae, a circle of eclectic adepts in Bellingham WA, form a
vortex of the HML and the double current, adding Enochian, Tantrika,
Egyptian, Gnostic and other currents into the mix- VR is also a short-lived
magazine and spawned a weekly radio show for several years broadcasting
ritual/music work – Liber PP and AL both broadcast in this way. A number of
public rituals were done culminating in Feast of the Flesh in 83

- 82-84 GSS, mostly dissolute is formally dissolved- all go their own way,
but 3 members end up in the NW and continue as active IC members. The HML IC reforms as a smaller unit.

Nema’s Book Published- MAAT MAGICK

HML in ‘passive’ mode- many things happening at individual vortexes…

“proto’ Internet info systems formed- Hermetic Expedient, Mail art networks
Level, RNA/DNA etc.

1987- Harmonic Convergence performed many places- in Seattle the Elevenstar
was performed as it was elsewhere

90-93- The internet hits- all changes

- 93-94- HML Web site crafted with real help from QBLH Brother NE-
originally designed as an archives, it soon generated email interest from
many.

First simple ‘cc elist’ formed

A progression of elists evolved, the web site evolved, ‘members’ increased
and so on.

THE ELEVENSTAR ritual becomes the central praxis of the new, emerging HML-
the concept of a ‘CyberOrder’ gells among the IC and the HML is manifested
as the first truly Cyber Order with the Elevenstar the central communion,
the moonbase temple as the astral meeting place and the new moon as the
time/space coordinate.

For 17 years this has continued in many different forms.

94- 2000

New members of elist, HML & Amazing blooming in a number of other countries,
especially Australia. The Piper of Oz, Orryelle, joined the IC as later did
Papa Nick- new channelings have continuously been made, more of the double
current earthed in Art and Writing and Music and Magicks of all sorts.

(Nema’s notes to me re this: It has evolved. In various news stories, cooperation is demonstrating its superiority to competition, even as great disasters provide challenges to our survival.I doubt that we're out of a job, though. As I recall from one of AC's writings, his answer to success was Service. IMO, "the slaves" have no clue about how to *really*serve anything or anybody. How about: the wise shall serve?- I paraphrased for the crowd and left it open as to what form the future work would take and stressed the openness and flexibility and cooperative nature of the monthly work)

Let us now define what this thing called the HML IS- to do that, I will walk through the founding Charter and give a few comments;

THE CHARTER OF THE HORUS MAAT LODGE & comments & 'takeaways' (actual charter quotes in bold)

DO WHAT THOU WILT SHALL BE THE WHOLE OF THE LAW.

(Note: 2/3 of the audience answered ‘Love is the law, love under will!’
I grinned and added- ‘So this is the type of crowd I have eh?”)

     * The Horus Maat Lodge is a seed-gestalt, a priesthood, and an instrumentality of the Universal Pattern of Consciousness. We accept and live by the Law of Thelema as promulgated in Liber Al Vel Legis. It is our will to assist the mutation of Homo Sapiens to Homo Veritas, and to assist each other, and all sentients living today, to find the Gateway to Maat (Truth).

The HML is three things; A magickal seed of something new and aware, an awakening to consciousness of our species, a meme on the reality of this core unity.
It is a group of adepts who acknowledge their roles of being part of a ‘priesthood’ that takes responsibility for manifesting and nurturing this unified species consciousness
As such, we are merely parts of a much larger and all-encompassing ‘program’ that could be called Gnosis or direct knowledge of the divine

The goal of this new Lodge is to do magick on a global scale, presumptuous maybe, but we were thinking big ☺
As such we accept Thelema as it is transmitted in the BOTL BUT, and this is crucial, not in any way limited to that manifestation. In general, as the Lodge has evolved over the last 30 years, out definition of THELEMA has broadened considerably and, as is healthy, members have very different criteria.

Yet Thelema or the 93 current is seen as not enough to insure success, the project must take into account and link with the future probability we will, one where humanity has evolved to a higher state of divinity and consciousness labeled ‘homo veritas’
The Gateway to Maat is the Quantum gateway that lets us make the future we choose while accepting that the future is reaching back to us with both help and real information
Maat is balance, but more than that, Maat is the principle of real, cosmic justice in the sense of ‘truth’ manifesting. This, in human terms, is the becoming of gods.

TAKEAWAY: WHAT IS THE GREAT WORK? BY CLEARLY SPECIFYING WHAT IT IS AND WHAT THE LODGE CAN DO, IT CREATES A REALITY TRAIL/POSSIBILITY FUTURE. THERE IS NO GOD BUT MAN- GETTING THERE IS THE ISSUE.

To this end, we hereby agree, as a matter of True Will, to abide by the terms of this Charter.

* 1. (10.)    The Horus Maat Lodge is a body Invisible on the Outer. It meets on varied planes and is not restricted by time or space.
Candidates shall be Thelemites - those who are living in love under will - and have attained at least some Knowledge and Conversation of their Holy Guardian Angel.

The HML became a functioning Cyberlodge, a fully running magickal order,  maybe the first, that is wholly centered in cyberspace. This is tremendous  freedom, we are not tied to matter in any way as a Lodge! Our members are  all over the world. Our conversations have no limit, except that English is  the default language. Membership is open to all who just take a moment to  see what we are about. Those who do not flow with the magickal work we do,  simply leave. The real Temple or Lodge is the shared symbol and universe of  the participants. The greatest part of this is that THIS has been our goal  for centuries: to 'earth' the Lodge of Spirit in Matter.' What classical  authors called, the decent of Sophia (wisdom)..

TAKE AWAY: THE WEB IS THE EXOSKELETON OF AN EMERGING WORLD CONSCIOUSNESS AND A REIFICATION OF THE ASTRAL PLANE/ SPIRIT WORLD. IT IS A PRIME TOOL FOR THE GREAT WORK AND SHOULD BE UTILIZED FULLY IN TERMS OF NEW MODALITIES OF COMMUNION.

Re the HGA- This is clearly seen as an order for those who are adepts, it is not an order with a training or probationary level to it.
Basically, play with us you play with the big dogs a certain level of awareness and initiation is expected from members and the link one has to forge with ones HGA or ALLY or TOTEM or DAIMON or what have you is essentially if we are to activate and manifest the HGA of the planet. True newbies are helped along until they find what they need. Lurkers are fine but may be confused…

TAKE AWAY: EVERY MAN AND WOMAN IS A STAR, THE STAR IS THE HIGHER SELF, CONNECTION AND INTEGRATION WITH THIS IS CRUCIAL TO ANY OTHER SERIOUS MAGICK.

There are no fees charged for instruction pertaining to Initiation; membership, admission and participation are likewise free. Tangible goods and mundane services may earn fair market value.

Within this paradigm, hierarchal initiation is meaningless. Initiation is seen as an utterly self-directed course, and it is up to each star to create the quantum world that gives him or her the initiation he/she needs.

TAKE AWAY: DISCONNECTING MONEY FROM INITIATION BRINGS THE INITIATION MODALITY INTO LINE WITH THE NEW AEON- NO LONGER A LADDER BUT A CIRCLE OR HELIX. THE OLD ORDER MODALITIES ARE NOT NECESSARY AND MAY IN FACT INTERFERE WITH/RESTRICT THE EVOLUTION OF MAGICKAL ORDERS AND/OR INITIATIONS

* 2. (9.)     Lodge members will work toward full mastery over all their faculties, the Gods/Goddesses and especially those known as the Forgotten Ones. These forces of the Unconsciousness are to be respected as the source of personal magickal power; as such, they shall be ordered under will to the end of effecting Will's manifestation.

Members are expected to master the basics of standard ‘occult’ training, understand and have relations with the archetypes and powers within and without as well as being fully aware of their Shadow or dark side and the primal lower-cortex animal-instincts referred her as the Forgotten Ones.
In other words, as Jung would say, members should be actively engaged in Individuation and exploring or and gaining knowledge of the Inner and Outer worlds towards the end of doing one’s Will, what one needs to do.

TAKE AWAY: A MAGICKAL LODGE NEED NOT FUNCTION AS A TRAINING ORDER EXCEPT IN THE MOST COMMUNITARIAN VIEW, EACH MUST MAKE HIS OR HER OWN ‘INNER LINKS’ IN ORDER TO DO THE GREAT WORK.

The Lodge itself links directly to the Collective Unconscious and works continuously to the end of awakening it to full species consciousness.

Here it is- what we do. We are not primarily a fraternal order, we are clearly and completely a Magickal order. Magick is the art of causing change in conformity with will, but Spare also noted that magick was the art of attracting without asking- there we have the conscious/unconscious aspects of the HML in action. Art and free-flowing creative ritual seems to have evolved as the key tools.

TAKE AWAY: THE LINKS THAT EMPOWER THE LODGE AND MAKE IT MAGICKALLY VIABLE AS A CHANNEL OF GNOSIS ARE NOT LIMITED IN ANY WAY, FLEXIBILITY IS THE NEW PARADIGM, NOT ORDER.

* 3. (8.)    The Rites of Thelema and those of Maat, or their successful equivalents, are to be practiced as a means of achieving the Double Current. Magical records of specific workings are to be kept, and copies submitted to the Inner Council for evaluation and placement in the Archives. The Council will advise and assist members in their work if requested to do so. The Council reserves the right to refuse advice if it judges circumstances to warrant such refusal.

And here is the how-to:

Thelema, the 93 current, the fiery energy enveloping our planet at present, regardless of what people call it, is the basis for all magickal work here and now. Liver Al Vel Legis, a significant Tantra for this new age, though not the only one, offers much in the way of instruction and manifestation. The adept first must take empowerment from this fire of gnosis. It is then that the adept is expected to forge a connection with the energy of the future Aeon (that is available, like all Aeons and energies here/now) in order to balance the explosive nature of Thelemic Current. HOW the adept does these 2 things is utterly up to him or her. The Lodge provides many rituals and such, but it is very very open ended. Each star is unique.

TAKE AWAY: THOSE WHO MANIFEST THELEMA (IN THE WIDEST SENSE) CAN BENEFIT FROM CONNECTING WITH AND INTEGRATING THE MAAT CURRENT OF ENERGY. CHECK IT OUT.

* The Horus Maat Lodge confers no grades; it recognizes four stages of development within it's own context. These are: Operating within the 93 current and then: 1) Contacting the Maat Current while achieving of an understanding of it's basic nature; 2) activity of ritual and results; 3) uniting the Maat Current and the 93 Current within the Magickal Consciousness, thus producing the Double Current; 4) achieving mastery in the essential On-GOingness of existence.

While 30 years and made us all a bit more flexible in terms of how/when/etc this is done, the basic pattern remains basically the same. There are some who operate wholly in Maat, some who barely tough Maat and live & breathe Horus, it is strictly DWTW in this regards, What is crucial is that both of these energies be connected with the adept and with each other to create a vortex we call ‘double current.’
Why? Because the magickal act of awakening species consciousness demands 2 ends of the tightrope of possibility and manifestation be rooted in the NOW and in the FUTURE. As one Quantum scientist said ‘The future in QM can be seen as our future selves becoming God reaching back to us’ Why? To make sure it happens. In other words, our Guardian Angels are out future selves. All times are concurrent, therefore we are in charge of crafting the evolutionary ‘future’ we will, a future that already exists but one that is just one of many much more horrible futures. It is not a crap shoot, it is species Will and, we believe, our purpose.

* . (7.)     The Horus Maat Lodge is a seed-gestalt, a precursor of the practical Unity of Humanity as a fully-conscious entity. Members will extend their awareness to a planetary level and beyond, practicing personal contact with the life of the species as a constant condition.

TAKE AWAY: THE LODGE IS NOT THE GOAL, IT IS A VEHICLE FOR THE GOAL. THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY. THE GOAL IS LONG TERM AND ALL-ENCOMPASSING. THE LODGE IS NOT A TOOL (OLD MECHANISTIC SCHEMA) IT IS A SEED. THE GOAL IS FOR IT TO OUTGROW ITSELF.

What the Lodge IS just as important as what it DOES, in educational training this is called MODELING; the idea is simple, people with tend to do what you DO not what you say. Talking does not cook the rice and neither does egocentrism. The goal of the HML like many utopian communities is to create a new model or paradigm for adepts and occultists of all kinds to work together within. A new sore of laboratory, if you will. Cyberspace has, of course, handed us the most amazing and useful tool for this experiment in ‘agape!’

Alchemical workings will be conducted with the spiritual welfare of the Partner ever in awareness.
