The Passing of a Tibetan

J. spoke with great authority. He was answering questions, giving the correct pronunciation of the Sanskrit that comprised the mantras, reciting text. . The small group at the Tibetan Cultural Center was pleased to have someone so knowledgeable in attendance. As I watched and listened I realized that J. was also very pleased with the depth of the answers he was giving. He had studied years upon years; he rightly was proud of himself, of his accomplishments. He had worked hard and learnt so much.

I noticed a movement to the side of the group. I glanced and saw Mr. Norbu enter the room. He was a tall man, a strong man only a bit stooped by age and arthritis. He stopped at the edge of the group and listened. Mr. Norbu then did something unexpected. He walked up to where J. was seated and J. paused, a bit confused. Mr. Norbu slowly bent one long leg and then the other. The arthritis must have been bothering him.

Suddenly he was kneeling before J. with his hands in a position the Tibetans use for prayer. From where I was seated I could see both J.’s and Mr. Norbu’s face. Mr. Norbu’s face shown with a profound simplicity. He appeared to be honoring some infinitely deep spirituality he saw in J. I have only seen such a look on the faces of children returning the love of an omniscient parent.

J’s eyes filled with tears. He shook his head, “Don’t do this. Don’t do this.”

That is all I can remember. It’s as if something tore in my mind. I’m sure that after a time Mr. Norbu stood and J. understood that awe full look. Perhaps we all laughed. Mr. Norbu had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. I don’t know.

Dostoyevsky wrote of Russian saints. Men and women who mixed passion and humility to create a way of being that equally honored and transcended the World. I never thought I would know such men or women. I am grateful to have memories of a man such as this.

Mr. Norbu passed two days ago on Friday.

Loss is like a hole in your soul. It’s a hole, not a space. Its not a space to be filled by something else. My body acknowledges its presence with a sinking feeling; a sense of being alone and frightened and sad. This is my time of mourning.

I know that in time the hole will become an opening and the opening will become a space and the space will call to something fine and I will smile. Mourning will be warmed by the first light of morning and I will wake my self from the sadness as from a dream.

Why mourn? I have lost a spiritual friend. I have lost an example of what it means to be a good man. I am diminished…I am smaller. A part of my world has fallen away.

I give honor to this “I” and the bouquet of flowers and thorns it presents. This is who I am and what I do. It is a ticket to wander and the great flowing path can only lead beyond beyond.

I relax in the wisdom of no escape. The Tibetans have a saying, “The wolf must eat.” and now “I” must mourn.

These three degrees are what is referred to by “admit”, “pass”, and “raise” into the Mysteries. To “exalt” refers to the 4th – 90th degrees, sometimes called the “higher degrees”. Within Ormus Lodge, these degrees are conferred in a consecratory manner, to any Master, as the Spirit moves. The remaining degrees, 91st through 97th, are essentially administrative in nature.
