ELEPHANTINE KHNUM
Aion 131
Aswan, Egypt 3/06
Here is the final cataract
Here the First and Last:
The Eternal Mound of Creation
The roaring currents of Emerald Nile
Rush about us
Heading into the Southern Deserts
As the glistening Shadow
Of Ram-headed Khnum rises above All
Rising from the First and Last
From the infinite churning Waters of Nun.
Ruins, pillars, a million shards
Of ancient silent pottery
Cover the island
Cast-offs from the Potter-God’s creation
From the Wheel of the Mighty One
Shards
Of the Cosmos
Of Gods
Of men and animals and
The World
Signs of ever-evolving, ever-shedding life
The Lord of Elephantine
Tosses his glistening horns
Into the brilliant blue sky
With the clay of aeons he throws
The source of all upon his wheel : The Sun Egg
It cracks
Golden Heka-light pours forth
The inundation
Of sparkling Gods and Goddesses
Arises as Night falls
As a swarm of Stars
Covering the layers upon layers
Of hymn-filled temples
On dusk-silent Elephantine
Tua Khnum!
