IN MEMORIA- STEVE IRWIN
; A SON OF PAN

Greetings to you all.
..... As a young lad, I remember watching
one episode of 'The Crocodile Hunter', where he got bitten in a
lightning
strike by a King Cobra. While the poison flowed through him, he
continued
narrating to the camera, as if it was an everyday occurence. I remember
thinking, 'That man's a legend,' and I'm sure that others out there
will agree.
Moving to Australia in the late 90s, I was frequently dragged to
wineyards in
the Barossa Valley. The workers always warned my sister and I that
brown snakes
lived in the long grass. That always got us out in a hurry. And as a
result, I
gained more respect for the man who dealt with these things every day,
facing
animals that could kill in an instant in the same manner as we face a
cat on the street.
Deep down, I'm sure that we all knew that he would meet an end by
animal. To me,
Steve Irwin would never die in a car wreck or of cancer or some
disease. Even
old age would never claim him. It had to be by animal, and what a way
to go. A
stingray. Who would've thought it? Croc, probably. Snake, maybe.
Stingray,
never. And this, I believe, adds to the legend of the man himself.
I'm sure that he wouldn't hold any grudge against the stingray. If he
could make
a comment from the great beyond, I'd imagine that he'd first say a few
words to
Terri, Bindy Sue and Bob. Then, I think he'd into one of his famous
spiels
which we all know him for. "Wham!" I think he would say. "Wham! Look at
that
lightning fast jab. Super-fast and super deadly. And just like that,
I'm gone.
Crikey, what a beautiful animal." This was Steve Irwin. No matter what
went on,
it was always about the animals. While I will not see it here in New
Zealand as much as you in Australia
will see it, I can envisage the next week. Tributes will pour in from
across the
nation, and indeed from across the world. Zoos across the globe will
pay respects to
the man. John Howard will stand up and make a speech about what the man
did for Australia. As for me, all I can do is type this e-mail, a
eulogy of sorts. To
me, Steve Irwin was a hero, and in my mind, I will always remember him,
sitting on the floor surrounded by paramedics, describing how beautiful
that King Cobra was.
Godspeed, Steve ol' mate. We'll miss you
Sam

"I am an artist
deeply inspired by the mythic traditions of the world. I draw
inspiration from ethnographic journals, museum catalogs, nature and
ancient ruins. I feel that there is a connection between ancient tribal
art and the basic mythic building blocks of human creativity. By
exploring the myths and archetypes found around the world, one can
begin to piece together the subconscious dream landscape of human
visual symbolism, and watch its transformation through time. I hope to
elaborate upon on ancient and modern symbols to make timeless and
powerful works of art. In my work I like to play with vague and
ambiguous images to force the viewer's creativity to complete the
picture by drawing its own conclusions. It is akin to watching clouds
taking shape and often sparks creativity and inspiration in viewers."
