Scrying with Apophysis
By Blue
Apophysis is a fractal flame generator. It is a freeware program
written by Mark Townsend. Fractal flames are algorithmically generated
images and animations. The shape depends on a complex math equation
based on random geometrical shapes selected by the flame generator. You
can also set the shapes manually, but this requires some understanding
of the mathematical equations involved. The screen saver Electric
Sheep has many animated flame fractals that have been generated with
Apophysis and other programs like Ultra Fractal.
What do you use scrying for?
I first discovered I could scry with this program when, deep in a
conversation with a friend concerning a magickal dilemma, I opened the
program and the first random fractal that was generated was a perfect
answer to the problem we had been discussing. I also scry for other
people. I ask them to pick a number between 1 and 100 that they like or
resonate with. I will also ask for a picture they like, often of
themselves or to chose a color they vibe with. For example, for my
friend S.D., I had him select a number (he chose 15). I picked a
picture of him to use that was posted on his web-site. It took 30 loads
of the random bank for the 15th fractal to look as beautiful as I know
this person to be. At the time of the scry, we had never met in person
yet. I knew him only from an online network. Later we met at a festival
and he was indeed a beautiful spiritual person as I had
perceived. When this fractal flame came up Apo070406-3015, I knew
it was the final picture to use for the scry. I then used a photo of
S.D. standing on a rock under a blue sky by the sea as the coloring
gradient. I also have done a series of scrys for the Holy Days of
Thelema. I used a number related to each day as the one selected from
the random batch. For example, I used 5 to scry for Hadit on April 9th.
I looked at all variations and in the first bank, the 55th one was
this. Apo070409-55a.jpg (above)
How do I start scrying?
When the program is first opened it generates a list of 100 random
fractal flames in a sidebar. You can click a number from the
random bank to see the corresponding fractal. You can also reload the
random list and it will generate another series of a hundred fractals,
adding a number one at the beginning of the file names. In this way you
can scry increasingly larger numbers into the hundreds. To color
the flame you can use either a preset gradient or use the smooth
palette option in the gradient window to browse for an image to be used
as the color gradient. You can manipulate the flame using the Editor,
Adjustment, Mutation and 3D rotation buttons to look for interesting
shapes and faces in any given fractal. The fractal flames are three
dimensional mathematical graphs. Moving them around, rotating them, and
changing the position of the color gradient all allow for different
views of the same 3D fractal flame object.
