For many days and many nights,
for reasons he could scarcely understand,
a Unicorn followed a winding road--
his road to the City of the Pyramids.
He endured much suffering along this road,
but much more might have still found him willing,
for no pain had ever struck quite so deep,
as his longing for the City of the Pyramids.
Many beautiful things did he sometimes see,
on his road through the jungle or the desert.
But so many gardens he had left untouched!
What cathedrals he had merely passed by!
For his winding road led him straight and true,
to his destiny, in the City of the Pyramids.
Yet one day he came upon a fortress,
upon walls where his road stretched no more,
and in front of these walls, was an Angel there speaking,
of his journey to the City of the Pyramids.
"O Unicorn!", he said, "thy way is complete!"
"This road, it can lead you no further!"
"The path you have chosen is a terrible path,
your vanity has led you astray."
"This fortress stands and forever must stand,
TURN BACK from the City of the Pyramids!"
But the Unicorn wavered not at all,
and spoke to the angel thus:
"O Angel, my friend, I wish you no harm,
as a messenger your skill is superb."
"But this road is my road, and long have I known,
that it leads to the City of the Pyramids."
"Somehow, in some way, I *must* go on,
this road, I *will* travel further."
"Your fortress is a lie that I will smash to the ground,
though a Kingdom must I tear apart also!"
"For your Master is a liar whose messages are lies,
though I do not doubt that you believe them,
for your god is no God, for I know of no God,
who would hide from me the City of the Pyramids!"
"One way or another, I will pass you by,
I will fight to the death if I have to."
"Too much have I wasted, too far have I come,
I have nothing at all left to lose."
"Yet my faith is not shaken, and still will I cry:
'Ave Lucifer!' in the City of the Pyramids!"
But the Angel was laughing (a terrible laugh!),
and his body was suddenly all flame!
And then he opened a door (a most secret door),
to His temple in the City of the Pyramids.
And the Unicorn just smiled, an all-knowing smile...
at the Angel of the City of the Pyramids.
